Using Health Insurance for Your Appointments

We’re pleased to accept patients using private health insurance for their physiotherapy or podiatry treatment. We’re registered with most of the major insurers, including AXA, Bupa, WPA and Aviva, and you can also use health cash plans such as Medicash and Westfield.

Insurers we work with: Bupa, WPA, AXA and Aviva

We know insurance can sometimes be a little confusing, so here’s a simple guide to how it works.

Before your first appointment

Please check with your insurer that your treatment is covered and, where required, obtain an authorisation or claim number.

It is also important to check:

  • How many sessions or how much treatment your policy covers
  • Whether there are any restrictions on your cover
  • Whether you have an excess to pay

What does an insurance excess mean?

An excess is the amount you have agreed to pay towards your healthcare costs before your insurer starts contributing.

For example, if your policy has a £100 excess, your insurer may require you to pay the first £100 of your treatment costs yourself.

We will still submit the invoices for your appointments to your insurer as usual. Your insurer will then tell us how much they will pay and how much is your responsibility.

Any amount allocated to your excess remains payable by you directly to Altius Healthcare.

An example

If your appointments total £150 and you have a £100 excess:

  • You pay: £100
  • Your insurer pays: £50

This is a simple example. Your individual policy and level of cover will decide what your insurer pays.

How does payment work?

We will bill your insurer directly for your appointments wherever your policy allows us to do so.

If your insurer tells us that some or all of the cost is your responsibility, for example because of your excess, we will contact you for payment of that amount.

Please remember that your insurance policy is an agreement between you and your insurer. Altius Healthcare does not decide how much your excess is or what your policy covers.

If you believe your excess is incorrect, or have any questions about your cover, please contact your insurer directly. Unfortunately, we are unable to change or negotiate an excess on your behalf.

A quick checklist

Before starting treatment, please:

  • Confirm with your insurer that physiotherapy or podiatry is covered
  • Obtain an authorisation or claim number if required
  • Check how many sessions or how much treatment is covered
  • Ask whether you have an excess and how much it is
  • Let us know if your insurer makes any changes to your authorisation or cover

Not sure about something?

Please ask our team and we’ll be happy to help with anything relating to your appointments and our billing process.

For questions about your policy, excess or level of cover, please speak directly to your health insurer.
