About Doug

Doug is the founder of Altius Healthcare and currently serves as Health & Performance Director for Red Bull UK. Over a career spanning more than 25 years, he has worked as a sports physiotherapist at the highest levels of professional sport – including England Rugby, Sale Sharks, London Wasps, and a roster of Premiership, international, and Olympic athletes.

Doug established the Hip and Groin multi-disciplinary team over ten years ago – the only clinic of its kind in the UK – and continues to hold close working relationships with the leading orthopaedic surgeons and hospitals across Greater Manchester. This means that patients who need consultant input, imaging, or surgical referral during their treatment can be seen quickly, without waiting on a GP referral pathway.

Doug founded Altius in 2016 with a clear principle: to give every private patient the same standard of care that an elite athlete receives. That principle still drives the clinic today. Whether you are a weekend runner, a desk-based professional with chronic back pain, or a professional athlete preparing for competition, the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation you receive at Altius is informed by more than two decades of work at the top of professional sport.

Conditions Doug treats

  • Sports injuries – from acute injury management through to structured return-to-play programmes, drawing on direct experience in Premiership rugby, international football, and Olympic sport
  • Spinal pain and sciatica – assessment and treatment of lower back pain, disc-related symptoms, sciatica, and chronic spinal conditions using manual therapy, targeted exercise, and diagnostic imaging referral where needed
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation – structured recovery programmes following orthopaedic surgery, with direct access to the consultant surgeons Doug has worked alongside for over a decade
  • Hip and groin conditions – complex cases referred through the Hip and Groin multi-disciplinary team Doug established
  • Chronic or complex cases – patients who have not responded to previous treatment and need a higher level of diagnostic and clinical input

Treatments Doug offers

Doug delivers manual therapy, joint manipulation (as a member of the MACP — the recognised UK standard for manipulative physiotherapy), diagnostic ultrasound, shockwave therapy, and dry needling. His treatment approach combines precise clinical assessment with evidence-based hands-on work and targeted rehabilitation programmes.

Diagnostic ultrasound allows Doug to examine soft tissue structures — muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints — in real time during an assessment, which means faster, more accurate diagnosis without waiting for external imaging appointments.

Elite sport experience

Doug’s career in elite sport spans more than two decades:

  • Health & Performance Director, Red Bull UK (current)
  • Head Physiotherapist, Sale Sharks
  • Head Physiotherapist, London Wasps
  • England Rugby (including England Saxons)
  • Consultant physiotherapist to Premiership, international, and Olympic athletes across cycling, football, rugby, motorsport, and athletics

This isn’t marketing – it’s the clinical experience every patient at Altius directly benefits from. The high performance testing and elite sport services offered across our clinics are built on the same protocols Doug uses with professional athletes.
