Knee Pain
Knee pain affects how you walk, train, work, and sleep. Whether you’re dealing with a sports injury, post-surgical stiffness, or a condition that’s been building for months, our physiotherapy team can help you get back to moving without pain.
At Altius Healthcare, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Every knee is different, and the cause of your pain determines the treatment. Our clinics across Greater Manchester offer specialist assessment, hands-on physiotherapy, shockwave therapy, Ostenil joint injections, and structured rehabilitation programmes — all under one roof.

Common Causes of Knee Pain We Treat
Knee pain can stem from a wide range of causes. The conditions we see most frequently in clinic include:
- Anterior knee pain and patellofemoral pain syndrome — common in runners and those with sedentary jobs where prolonged sitting loads the patellofemoral joint
- Ligament injuries (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL) — often from sport or sudden twisting movements, requiring careful staged rehabilitation
- Meniscus tears — from impact, deep squatting, or degenerative wear over time
- Osteoarthritis of the knee — age-related joint changes causing stiffness and pain on load, often manageable without surgery
- Tendinopathies — including patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) and ITB-related lateral knee pain
- Post-surgical rehabilitation — following knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, or arthroscopy
- Referred pain from the hip or lower back — frequently misdiagnosed without thorough assessment
A precise diagnosis matters. Treating the wrong structure wastes time and money. Our assessment process is designed to identify the specific source of your pain before any treatment begins.
How We Assess and Treat Knee Pain
Your first appointment at Altius includes a comprehensive clinical assessment. We examine range of motion, strength, joint stability, and movement patterns to understand not just where your pain is, but why it’s there. From that assessment, we build a treatment plan tailored to your specific diagnosis, activity level, and goals.
Depending on your presentation, your treatment plan may include one or more of the following:
Manual Physiotherapy and Exercise Rehabilitation
Hands-on techniques to restore movement, combined with a progressive exercise programme targeting the specific muscle groups and movement patterns contributing to your knee pain. This is the foundation of most knee rehabilitation programmes and is tailored to your stage of recovery.
Shockwave Therapy
For tendinopathies and chronic soft tissue conditions that haven’t responded to standard physiotherapy, we offer focused shockwave therapy. Shockwave stimulates blood flow and tissue repair at the cellular level, and is supported by strong clinical evidence for conditions such as patellar tendinopathy and ITB syndrome.
Ostenil Joint Injections
For osteoarthritic knee pain or joint stiffness that limits your rehabilitation, Ostenil (hyaluronic acid) injections can reduce pain and improve joint lubrication without the side-effect profile of repeated steroid injections. These are administered in clinic by our injection-trained clinicians.
Ossur Bracing
Where structural support is needed during rehabilitation — particularly following ligament injury or post-operatively — we fit and supply Ossur knee braces, selected to match your specific injury and activity requirements.
Your Knee Pain Specialist Team
Our physiotherapists hold HCPC registration and are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Several members of our team have worked in professional sport, bringing rehabilitation protocols developed at the highest level to every patient — whether you’re a competitive athlete or recovering from a knee replacement.
