Massage therapy is one of the most effective tools we use at Altius to reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, and help you move more freely. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or looking after your body between training sessions, our physiotherapists and sports therapists deliver targeted massage as part of a structured treatment plan — not as a standalone session in isolation.
Types of massage we offer
Our therapists are trained across a range of massage techniques and will select the most appropriate approach based on your assessment. Treatments include:
Sports massage – deep, targeted work to release muscle tightness, improve flexibility, and support recovery from training or competition.
Trigger point release – focused pressure on specific knots within the muscle to reduce referred pain and restore normal function.
Deep transverse frictions – a precise technique applied across damaged muscle fibres or tendons to stimulate healing and break down scar tissue.
Lymphatic massage – gentle rhythmic movements to reduce swelling and encourage fluid drainage, particularly useful after surgery or acute injury.
Post-isometric relaxation – a combination of gentle muscle contraction and assisted stretching to improve range of movement in restricted joints.
All of these techniques work by increasing blood flow to the affected area, removing waste products from damaged tissue, and reducing pain signals within the central nervous system. The result is improved muscle flexibility, reduced pain, and greater confidence in movement.
How massage fits into your treatment
At Altius, massage is never delivered in isolation. Your therapist will combine hands-on treatment with a personalised exercise programme designed around your specific needs and goals. This approach ensures you get lasting results rather than short-term relief that fades within days.
During your initial assessment, your physiotherapist or sports therapist will identify which massage techniques are most appropriate for your condition. Massage may be combined with other treatments such as joint mobilisation, acupuncture, or shockwave therapy depending on what your body needs.
Massage is billed as part of a physiotherapy or sports therapy session. If you have had massage treatment with us before and found it beneficial, let the admin team know when booking so we can match you with the right therapist.
Not just for injuries
We are passionate about injury prevention, and many of our patients book regular maintenance massage sessions to stay on top of recurring tightness, manage the physical demands of their job, or support their training. Around thirty per cent of our weekly patient list is made up of people who originally came to us with an injury and now return regularly to keep their body in good condition.
At Altius Healthcare, our clinician will examine each individual patient, then assess whether massage would be an effective treatment modality. All of our fully qualified clinicians provide a variety of different types of massage and have regularly updated training on safe practice.
Massage can be billed as part of a physiotherapy session and if you have had the treatment before and benefitted from it please make sure the admin team know and they will book you an appointment with the appropriate physiotherapist.
