Movement Therapy
Movement therapy is a term used to describe mobility exercises at one or more joint, which acts as an under-rated form of treatment for pain reduction. Now a days, it is commonly known that bed rest is not recommended for recovery from injuries, and movement is key. Movement therapy is simple but effective. It is gentle and controlled, and works by stimulating circulation and synovial fluid within the joints – bringing floods of lovely nutrients into the area to aid healing. Examples of movement therapy include range of movement exercises, stretches, and somatic practice including yoga and Pilates.
Movement therapy also taps into the brain and the central nervous system, telling the brain it is safe to move again, which is absolutely essential to regain normal range of movement and daily function. This mind-body connection, increases body awareness (also known as “proprioception”) to help you re-learn correct movement patterns and alignment, which pain may have prevented.
Movement therapy acts a stepping stone onto strengthening exercises, cardiovascular fitness and return to sport. As with any form of exercise, it brings with it an abundance of well-being benefits too, to help us feel less stressed and just generally happier day-to-day.

Pilates
Pilates is a low impact form of exercise which involves strengthening as it’s focus, more than stretching, but there is a combination of both for a great overall workout. At Altius, our specially trained therapists can adapt your Pilates workout to help you recover from your injury. Pilates is a perfect part of injury rehabilitation because there is less stress on the body while you are in pain, to ensure you can workout safely without flaring up your symptoms. You can also book a Pilates session without an injury too! If you want to get stronger, more flexible and to feel more relaxed, Pilates is for you.
Pilates involves training the core muscles, including the deep core muscles, as well as the entire body for optimum results. There is also focus on postural awareness and diaphragmatic breathing, plus dynamic and static stretching in the warm-up and cool down.
Our most common client groups for Pilates are:
- Recovery from any injury (most commonly back and neck pain)
- Recovery post-surgery
- Athletes and sports participants of any level
- Pre and post-natal women
- Non-injured clients who want to get stronger and improve their overall health
