About Altius Healthcare
Expert physiotherapy, podiatry and rehabilitation across Greater Manchester built on over 20 years of experience in elite sport.
How Altius began
Altius Healthcare was founded in 2016 by Doug Jones, a chartered physiotherapist who spent over 15 years as head physiotherapist at some of the biggest names in professional rugby; Sale Sharks, London Wasps, and the senior England national team.
At the height of his career in October 2015, Doug received a life-changing diagnosis: a 3cm acoustic neuroma, a benign brain tumour growing near the nerves that control hearing and balance. Emergency surgery followed – a 12-hour operation to remove the tumour entirely.
The surgery saved his life, but it came at a cost. Doug was left profoundly deaf in his right ear, and his balance was severely affected. For a physiotherapist who had spent his career helping elite athletes recover from the most demanding injuries in sport, the road back to health became deeply personal.
Over the following months, Doug rehabilitated himself using the same principles he had applied to professional rugby players for over a decade. That experience of being on the other side of the treatment table changed everything about how he saw patient care.
In 2016, alongside his wife and fellow physiotherapist Anna, Doug founded Altius Healthcare with a single aim: to give every patient the same standard of care that an elite athlete receives.
Three years after surgery, Doug summited the Matterhorn at 4,500 metres, raising over £8,000 for the British Acoustic Neuroma Association. He went on to complete the Fan Dance — the SAS selection march through the Brecon Beacons. Today, he continues to treat patients in clinic every week alongside leading the Altius team.

How we treat our patients
At Altius, we treat the cause, not just the symptoms. Our approach is rooted in the same methodology Doug developed working in elite sport: a structured pathway from diagnosis through treatment to rehabilitation that addresses every factor contributing to your condition.
Diagnose
Every patient begins with a thorough assessment. We take time to understand the full picture — your injury, your history, your goals — before recommending a treatment plan tailored to you.
Treat
We combine hands-on treatment with the latest evidence-based techniques including physiotherapy, joint injections, shockwave therapy, acupuncture, and massage. Your treatment plan is designed to relieve pain and restore function as quickly as possible.
Rehabilitate
Recovery doesn’t end when the pain stops. We build personalised exercise and rehabilitation programmes that help you get back to full strength and stay there — whether that means returning to sport, getting back to work, or simply moving without discomfort.
